Solarium of Villa Savoye
The Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier in Poissy, France, incorporated a 'solarium' on the roof. Corbusier incorporated many modern technologies in the house, and the solarium was one of these. His understanding of roof gardens and elevated solariums came from Islamic architecture, which attempted to raise outdoor living off the ground, where dirt, water and vermin dwelled, and create a more humane and sophisticated experience of 'outdoor' living. A Solarium is in turn an experience of the sun in a controlled manner, to gain full benefit of sun exposure. It is still contested that sun expsosure is healthy, however it does provide vitamin d which is beneficial to humans, but over exposure to sun can be harmful. A site which can make the most of sun exposure is essential.
